The WEEE Directive and transformers
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive governs how electrical equipment is recovered and recycled at end of life. Transformers and switchgear fall within scope, and asset owners have a duty to ensure they are processed through compliant routes rather than sent to landfill.
OSS Transformer Removals processes all recovered equipment in line with WEEE requirements, prioritising material recovery and reuse wherever possible.
Materials recovered
Transformers are rich in recoverable materials. Copper windings, steel cores and tanks, and aluminium components all carry significant recycling value. We separate and route these streams to recover the maximum proportion of each unit.
Recovering these metals reduces demand for virgin material and diverts substantial tonnage from landfill.
Recycling routes versus landfill
Wherever a unit can be recycled rather than disposed of, it is. Only genuinely non-recoverable or hazardous fractions are routed to licensed disposal — and those are documented separately. This recycling-first approach is better environmentally and supports your own waste-reduction targets.
Sustainability and carbon reporting
For asset managers and estates teams under ESG and carbon-reporting obligations, we provide a record of recycled material destinations and tonnages. This audit trail supports your sustainability reporting and demonstrates responsible end-of-life management of electrical assets.
